Earlier, Deverakonda had acted in an advertisement for a betting app. The Cyberabad police had registered a case against him and a few other actors for promoting betting. Based on that case, the ED began a separate investigation.
It is alleged that due to celebrities promoting these apps, many people got involved in betting, suffered major financial losses, and in some tragic cases, even took their own lives.
So far, the ED has issued notices to 36 film industry members. Actress Manchu Lakshmi has been asked to appear on August 13. Veteran actor Prakash Raj has already recorded his statement.
Many celebrities and influencers with large followings are accused of misleading people through flashy ads like “Earn money for free” or “You can win too.” These ads are said to have encouraged youngsters to try betting apps, which led to financial losses for many.
