Australia’s big finisher for the middle order, that’s the role Marcus Stoinis will be taking up in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. The playing conditions in India and Stoinis have a good rapport as evidenced by him having the second best average while playing in these conditions. The all-rounder has amassed an impressive 380 runs from 11 outings. If that wasn’t grand enough, this player has 40 wickets to his name in the 50-overs format. Having won the 2021 T20 World Cup, this will be a second ODI World Cup appearance for the 34-year-old.
A memorable One-Day innings would be when Stoinis’ scored 146 runs against New Zealand in Auckland in 2017. It was his second ODI outing and he scored a triple figure score – his only in the format. Stoinis’ game helped rescue Australia from a precarious position of 54 for five. The right-handed batsman faced 110 deliveries and came very close to leading the Aussies to a successful chase of New Zealand’s 287-run target.
On a side note, Stoinis’ late father was undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer when he scored his only ODI century. A fellow patient in the hospital wrote to Stoinis later, revealing how Stoinis Sr. switched cricket on all the TVs to watch his son play from the hospital.
